An oak-aged highland tequila with the rich, rounded character of a fine sipping spirit.
What it is
Olmeca Altos Añejo is a 100% agave tequila bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV) and aged for around 18 months in former bourbon barrels. The extended time in oak brings out dried fruit, nut and vanilla notes while keeping the sweet cooked-agave character of Los Altos, Jalisco. It is a smooth, approachable añejo that rewards slow sipping and makes an excellent stirred cocktail.
Where and how it's made
- 100% blue Weber agave from the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco, Mexico
- Part of the agave is crushed with a traditional tahona stone wheel
- Created with input from bartenders and a Mexican master distiller
- Añejo, aged about 18 months in ex-bourbon barrels, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV)
Tasting notes
- Nose: dried fruit, toasted almond, vanilla and oak
- Palate: rounded and smooth, with caramel, baked agave and warm spice
- Finish: long and woody, with lingering vanilla
Serving and pairing
Sip it neat or with one large ice cube, or stir it into a tequila Old Fashioned or Manhattan-style cocktail. Pairs with grilled steak, braised short ribs, aged cheeses and dark chocolate. Store the bottle upright in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat.
