A gentle, high-rye Kentucky bourbon built for people who want flavor without the heat.
What it is
Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV). It belongs to the James B. Beam Distilling Co. Small Batch family and was introduced in 1992 by Master Distiller Booker Noe as a lighter, more approachable style of bourbon.
Where and how it's made
- Distilled and aged in Kentucky in new charred American oak
- Uses a rye-forward mash bill inspired by 18th-century distiller Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., who favored a larger share of rye in his recipe
- The lower bottling proof keeps the spice lively but the body light
Tasting notes
- Nose: toasted oak, vanilla and caramel, a hint of dried fruit and light spice
- Palate: brown sugar and honey layered with rye pepper over a light, easy body
- Finish: dry and clean, with lingering charred oak
Serving and pairing
Pour it neat or over a single large cube, or use it in lighter stirred drinks such as a Boulevardier or a highball. It pairs well with smoked almonds, charcuterie, maple-glazed pork or pecan pie.
